THE TAXI, LIMOUSINE & PARATRANSIT INDUSTRY

The Taxicab Industry

In the United States, there are approximately 6,300 companies operating 171,000 taxicabs. More than 80% of these companies operate less than 50 vehicles while 6% of taxicab operations have more than 100 vehicles in service. Taxicab companies provide work for 350,000 people and transport 1.4 billion passengers annually for purposes that primarily include business, travel, and community transportation.*

The Limousine Industry

In the United States, there are approximately 10,200 limousine companies operating 57,000 vehicles. About 9% of these operations have fleets with more than 20 vehicles. Limousine companies provide work for 124,000 people and transport 400 million passengers annually for a variety of purposes that include airport transfers, business and corporate travel, weddings, and social outings.*

The Paratransit and Contracting Industry

Primarily the result of public-private partnerships in transportation, this category of transportation includes private sedan, van, and minibus fleets that provide transportation service under contract to public or non-profit agencies. Social service fleets, non-emergency medical fleets and accessible transportation for the disabled provided through public agencies under Medicaid or ADA are all examples of this type of transportation.

In the United States, there are approximately 2,100 contract service fleets that operate 26,000 vehicles. These companies employ 71,000 people and provide mobility for 150 million passengers annually.*

TAXICAB, LIMOUSINE & PARATRANSIT ASSOCIATION (TLPA)

Established in 1917, the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA) is a non-profit trade association of and for the private passenger transportation industry. Its extensive membership spans the globe to include 1,100 taxicab companies, executive sedan and limousine services, airport shuttle fleets, non-emergency medical transportation companies, and paratransit services. Its mission remains the same today as it was at its conception… to provide its membership with a network of programs, services and support that will enhance their ability to effectively and profitably serve local public transportation needs. The TLPA Is the leading information, education, and legislative resource in the passenger transportation industry serving Its members by:

• Representing common federal legislative interests,
• Protecting and expanding industry rights and opportunities,
• Collecting, interpreting, and disseminating industry information,
• Providing forums for professional development and education,
• Advancing the image of the industry before the media and general public.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TRANSPORATION REGULATORS (IATR)

• Foster and provide sound research, orderly planning and effective coordination of all elements relating to the field of transportation regulation,
• Educate the general public and the business community on transportation regulation,
• Provide an information and referral service,
• Develop and maintain close liaison with local, state, province, country, federal and/or other appropriate government agencies.

NATIONAL LIMOUSINE ASSOCIATION (NLA)

The National Limousine Association was founded in 1985 as a voluntary, non-profit, tax exempt organization responsible for and dedicated to representing and furthering the worldwide, national, state and local interests of the luxury chauffeured ground transportation industry. Our membership includes limousine owners and operators, suppliers, manufacturers, and regional and state limousine associations.

NLA membership unites peers in a powerful way. By pooling the resources and knowledge of thousands of operators from around the world, the National Limousine Association is able to accomplish goals far beyond the scope of any single limousine company. The inclusion of suppliers and manufacturers who support operator interests as associate members provides additional expertise and greater empowerment. Working together, NLA members continue to redefine professionalism and improve the industry every day.

TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD (TRB)

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a division of the National Research Council, which serves as an independent adviser to the federal government and others on scientific and technical questions of national importance. The National Research Council is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.

The mission of the Transportation Research Board - one of six major divisions of the National Research Council - is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research. In an objective and interdisciplinary setting, the Board facilitates the sharing of information on transportation practice and policy by researchers and practitioners; stimulates research and offers research management services that promote:

technical excellence;
provides expert advice on transportation policy and programs;and
disseminates research results broadly and encourages their implementation.

TRB fulfills this mission through:

the work of its standing committees and task forces addressing all modes and aspects of transportation;
publication and dissemination of reports and peer reviewed technical papers on research findings;
management of cooperative research and other research programs;
conduct of special studies on transportation policy issues at the request of the U.S. Congress and government agencies;
operation of an online computerized file of transportation research information; and
the hosting of an annual meeting that typically attracts 9,000 transportation professionals from throughout the United States and abroad.
