DOMESTIC VISITORS

Travel to New York City in 2008 • REVISED 22 SEPTEMBER 2009

Buoyed by the particularly strong first three quarters of 2008, year-end domestic visitation held to a steady 37.1 million visitors, in spite of the global economic downturn.

The domestic visitor market to New York City can be largely characterized as leisure-driven (75%), short-stay (average of 2.6 nights, with 53% making a daytrip), repeat visitors (96%) who come from within driving distance of the City or from along the “Amtrak Corridor” (Boston to Washington, DC). Compared to overseas visitors, domestic visitors have a shorter trip length and a lower trip spend, but, given the large volume of domestic visitors, they are invaluable to the City’s economy, spending nearly $17 billion in 2008.

Note: In 2007, NYC & Company added Longwoods Travel USA® survey data to our models of domestic visitor travel volume and behavioral profiles. Prior year domestic volume estimates are based upon D.K. Shifflet & Associates, Ltd. DIRECTIONS® National Travel Survey.
