SIGN UP DEADLINE FOR ALL OWNERS OF MEDALLION TAXICABS
TAXICAB TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENTS, SERVICE SYSTEMS AND COMPLIANCE
The
New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) announces, as approved
by the TLC Board or Commissioners, that AUGUST 1, 2007, is the SIGN
UP DEADLINE by which OWNERS of all MEDALLION TAXICABS must enter into
CONTRACTS with Authorized Contractors (contractors approved by the TLC
to solicit OWNERS/AGENTS to sell, rent, lease or permit use of technology
enhancement systems and services and to install technology enhancement
systems in New York City Taxicabs) under the Taxicab Technology Program.
Check the TLC website (see address below) for information about the
Authorized Contractor(s).
The
TLC also announces that the COMPLIANCE DATE by which the installation
of taxicab technology service enhancements must be completed in all
MEDALLION TAXICABS is the FIRST SCHEDULED INSPECTION DATE for each such
medallion taxicab ON OR AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2007.
For
taxicabs that are to be retired within six months of the Compliance
Date, technology enhancement systems need not be installed in such taxicabs.
Authorized
vendors who sign up more than 3,000 taxicabs may, in writing, request
from the TLC an extension of time to install technology systems in such
taxicabs until the first inspection date on or after February 1, 2008,
which the TLC, in its sole discretion, may grant.
The
technology enhancements were approved in conjunction with a substantial
fare increase granted in March of 2004, and offer increased services
to the riding public and the industry including:
- credit/debit
card capabilities,
- a
passenger information monitor (PIM) with an interactive map,
- varied
entertainment and information options, and
- a
front seat driver information monitor (DIM) with lost and found,
- business
opportunity and emergency communications capabilities.
The new equipment will also automate the collection of data that previously
was entered manually by taxicab drivers on clipboards – an “electronic
trip sheet.”
Please
watch the TLC website (www.nyc.gov/taxi), or sign up for automatic e-mail
updates (see upper left hand side of home page) for news and information
about the technology enhancement systems. For specific information concerning
