Driver Education

The TLC is committed to providing safe, efficient, and active for-hire transportation. A fleet of well trained and knowledgeable drivers is the key to providing this level of service. Certified Education Providers, drivers, bases, fleets, and industry members can use this page to quickly and easily access education resources.

 

New TLC Driver License (Yellow & Green Taxicab, Livery, Black Car, and Lux Limo) Applicants: Education Requirements

1. All Education requirements must be completed within 90 days after applying for a TLC Driver License.


2. It is recommended that applicants take the WAV Course before the 24 Hour Course final exam.


3. You must apply for your TLC Driver License before you register for the TLC Driver Education Exam.

1. NYSDMV 6 hour Defensive Driving Course All applicants must complete NYSDMV 6 hour Defensive Driving Course within three (3) years prior to filing an application online. For more information, please check below: http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/industry/defensive_driver.shtml
2. Wheelchair Passenger Assistance Training All applicants must complete the Wheelchair Passenger Assistance Training. The school will notify the TLC when you have completed the course.
3. TLC Driver Education Course The course is available in languages other than English. Click here for a complete list of TLC- approved schools and the languages each offers. You must file an application with the TLC before registering for the exam. You will not be allowed to take the exam if you do not submit an application to the TLC. You must take and pass the final exam on a computer with a score of 70% or higher at the same school the course was taken. This means you must answer 56 out of 80 questions correctly in order to pass. You will be allowed to take the exam as many times as needed to pass during the ninety (90) day application period. The school will notify the TLC when you have completed the course and passed the final exam.

 

New Paratransit and Commuter Van Driver Applicants: Education Requirements

All Education requirements must be completed within 90 days after applying for a TLC Van Driver License

Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair
Accessible Vehicle Training

TLC Driver License applicants must complete the Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training in order to get a license. It is recommended that new applicants complete this training before taking the TLC Driver Exam.

Existing drivers who have not already completed the Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training must complete the training in order to renew their TLC Driver Licenses.

24 Hour TLC Driver Education Course

TLC Driver License applicants must complete a 24 Hour TLC Driver Education Course and pass an 80 question multiple choice exam on a computer with a grade of 70% or higher. You must answer 56 out of 80 questions correctly in order to pass. The course covers the following topics: TLC rules and regulations, Vision Zero, geography, safe driving skills and traffic rules, and customer service.

List of Required Education Courses for TLC Driver License Applicants (Yellow, Green, Livery, Black Car, and Lux Limo)

 

1 .TLC Driver Education Course:

• The 24 Hour course is available in languages other than English at certain school locations. Please contact the schools directly to register for a class session.


• You must provide your TLC application number (found on the email receipt from the TLC) in order to take the exam.


• You must take and pass the final exam on a computer with a score of 70% or higher at the same school the course was taken. This means you must answer 56 out of 80 questions correctly to pass.


• You may take the exam as many times as needed to pass during the ninety (90) day application period

2. NYSDMV 6 hour Defensive Driving Course

• All applicants must complete NYSDMV 6 hour Defensive Driving Course within three (3) years prior to filing a TLC Driver License application online

3. Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training

• All applicants must complete the Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training, even if you do not drive a wheelchair accessible vehicle(WAV).


• The school will notify the TLC when you have completed the course.

 

Tips for Completing Your Education Requirements Quickly

• Register for the 24 Hour course as soon as possible. You may take the course before you submit a TLC application.


• Do not wait until the last minute to take the exam.


• Use the FREE TLC study guides, available in multiple languages on the TLC driver education website listed at the bottom of this page.


• It is recommended that applicants take the WAV Course before the 24 Hour course final exam.


• All Education Requirements MUST be completed within 90 days after applying for a TLC Driver License.
