New Insurance Rates, Competition

Among Discussions at Enthusiastic
TLPA Spring Conference & Expo

Several hundred enthusiastic attendees gathered April 25-27 for the TLPA's Spring Conference & Expo in Palm Springs, California, an event that was marked by a robust line-up of transportation operators, experts, panelists and vendors pointing the way forward for the industry.

In his opening address, President Bill Scalzi noted that TLPA's most recent activities have focused on four key areas: addressing national legal, regulatory and legislative issues; developing alternative business models for the industry; effectively engaging the media on the public safety failings of transportation network companies (TNCs); and creating programs that build public respect and recognition for the industry.

"Now is the time to keep our membership strong so that TLPA can continue to support our industry in the capacities that I just presented. If we all continue to work together through TLPA, then we will be successful and we will prevail," Scalzi said.

Sponsors of the conference, held at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, included iCabbi, The Black Car Fund, iCARS, CMT Group and Autocab. Some three dozen exhibitors showcased their products and services in the Expo Hall. Attendees were treated to excellent meals served in the exhibit space, including complimentary full breakfast, lunch, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at various times during the event.

The General Session presented two major topics. One covered new insurance structures for the industry that are based on time and mileage, and represent significant savings for operators. The second discussion focused on specific tactics for pursuing long term competitiveness with TNCs. Both received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees.

The conference also hosted six exceptional breakout sessions on topics ranging from fleet marketing tactics to driver recruitment to the advent of autonomous vehicles. The TLPA also received nominations from the floor for its 2018 roster of TLPA officers and directors. Thirteen members were nominated. Additional nominations will be accepted through May 15 by contacting the TLPA office.

Operators who are new to TLPA can now take advantage of a 50% discount on membership dues for 2017. More information may be found on the TLPA website at www.tlpa.org. Members and nonmembers alike should also make plans now to attend TLPA's Mid-Year International Leadership Conference in Anchorage, Alaska, July 12-15, and TLPA's 99th Annual Convention & Trade Show in Denver, Colorado, October 8-12.

2017 Legislative Day

President Bill Scalzi and the association's leadership team invite our fleet operator members to participate--for free--in TLPA's 2017 Legislative Day. You will help strengthen the lines of communication between our industry and members of Congress, while helping to shape our operating environment. To join us, all you need to do is sign up in advance.

Never done anything like this before? Don't worry. You'll receive training on how Congress operates, an overview of TLPA's legislative positions, and other critical information from key speakers, all before visiting with your legislators and their staff on Capitol Hill!

What should you wear? Women should be in business attire and men in a coat and tie. And everyone should bring a small umbrella. If you are going to stay an extra day to see the sites plan for the temperature to be in the 80s.

Last year's Legislative Day was a great success! Take a look at our blog post to find out what happened and our photo album to see your colleagues (or maybe you?) in action. And check out the video at this link.

Hotel Room Rates

TLPA's rate is $284 per night for single/double occupancy at the Renaissance Washington, DC, Dupont Circle Hotel. The room bloc will close on Monday, May 15, 2017, or when it sells out, whichever comes first, so book your room right after you sign up for the Fly-In!
